News December 2007
The concerts in September went very well and the recordings sounds really good .4 Monday nights at Belleville in Oslo. I will release a lot of this music within the next year. I went to Santa Cruz ,California in October and played at a Looping festival. It was nice to meet a lot of musicians who were so into the thechnical side of Looping and I learned a lot. I met and played with Matthias Grob the inventor of the Gibson Echoplex Pro which I use for my looping stuff. Now I am preparing myself for a recording in Athens with the music of Vangelis Katsoulis . Paolo Fresu ,Bendik Hofseth and Paul Weritco will be in the band. I also have a concert in Tirmisoara , Romania on December 2 with my new project with Tommy Smith and Paolo Vinaccia.
News September 1. 2007 During the summer I played some festivals .North Sea with Ketil Bjørnstad , Alex Riel and Wolfgang Puschnig. I also did a nice duoconcert with Paolo Fresu in Itally. Jazz Junas in south of France is also a very nice festival with great atmosphere .Here I did one solo concert and one concert with Gerard Pansanel and Patrice Heral. We also did a reunion of the Sagn/ Arv band for the festival at Bø in Norway . Great to play that music again. The trio with Ferenc Snetberger and Paolo Vinaccia joined Bobby Mc Ferrin for a concert in Spain and one in Neuwied,Germany. He is just a fantastic musician. The concerts at Pizza Express in january was recorded and I was back there now for two nights where we also could present the cd called Inhouse . That is john Etherige on guitar and John Marshall on drums. Now comming up in september is 4 monday nights at the club Belleville in Oslo with different bands. sept 3 will be Bugge Wsseltoft and PerOdvar Johansen sept 10 Tommy Smith and Paolo Vinaccia sept 17 Nils Petter Molvær, Bendik Hofseth and Paal Nilsen Love sept 14 Tord Gustavsen and Thomas Strønen. I will record all this concert and maybe one day you can hear it .................
News May 2007 The tour with Tommy Smith went very well. I wrote a suite for the duo . It is called " Inderpendency " . We also played some originals and a very loose verion of " Prelude to a Kiss " . We recorded 5 concerts and I really would like to release some of this. The new year started with a recording at Rainbow studio with Ketil Bjørnstad. Alex Riel drums and Wolfgang Puschnig alto sax and flute. Also in January I played two nights at " Pizza Express " in London with John Etheridge and John Marshall. This was also recorded and hopefully will be released by August when thr trio is back at Pizza Express for a couple of nights. A special event was a concert in Budapest celebrating Ferenc Snetbergers 50 years birthday. Duos and trios with David Friedman, Markus Stockhausen, Paolo Vinaccia,Dahfer Yousef and Laslo Des.

In Mach I went to Athens for three nights with Vasillis Tsabropoulos as duo. We did not play for a couple of years and it was nice to meet again. I played only one concert in Oslo this winter .That was with Bugge Wesseltoft and Per Odvar Johansen at the club " Belleville " This was thr trio that played with Joshua Redman last summer at the Molde festival ,a concert that some critics named as concert of the year 2006. I am just back from 14 days in Poland with Apostolis Anthimoss Quartet. This quartet featured the fantastic Polish sax player Thomas Schukalski. Comming up which I look forward to is a duo concert in Italy with Paolo Fresu . Also a solo concert at Jubas Festival in France, and of cause two concerts with Bobby McFerrin with the Snetberger /Andersen / Vinaccia trio. This is in Spain and Germany in August.
November 10- 06
The summer and fall have been busy as usual. The concert in Istanbul with Nana Vasconcelos and Kudsi Erguner in July was very well received and it was great fun to play with this trio . Another highlight this summer was the concert with Joshua Redman at the Molde jazzfestival. With Bugge Wesseltoft piano and Per Odvar Johansen drums we did a concert that rceived raving reviews .
Joshua was great to work with and very open to all musical directions.
In August I went to Taipei, Taiwan with Patrice Heral, Angelo Comisso and Markus Stockhausen. For this concert I brought my Yamaha SLB 200 bass. It works fine live and there has been a writeup at the website Basstalk about the bass sound from this concert.

In september we did a 10 day tour of Norway with Ferenc Snetberger/Arild Andersen/Paolo Vinaccia trio. We have mostly been playing festivals and a concert here and there, so this tour was very good for the development of the trio.
I did a couple of recordings .One with Stian Carstensen and Frode Alnæs “Høstsløv “ out on Kirkelig Kulturverksted and one with Gøran Fristorp, to be released next year. Both recordings in Raibow studio with Jan Erik Kongshaug. If possible the sound is better than ever. Jan Erik is a magicman . The next event now is a 10 day tour of England and Scotland with saxophonist Tommy Smith.

July 2006
The year started with a nomination for “The Norwegian Grammy “ “Spellemansprisen” for my CD “ ELECTRA”. Unfortunately I did not get it, but I was very happy for the nomination. Late January I did two concerts in NDR , Hamburg where I met Angelio Comisso a great pianoplayer from Italy. We recorded with Markus Stockhausen and Patrice Heral. This quartet will meet again in Tapei,Taiwan on August 24. I am looking forward to that. Patrice and I also did a concert with Carsten Dahl in Bielsko Biala outside Kracow in Poland. On this concert I used my new Yamaha Silent Bass for the first time.

The traveling with the bass gets more and more difficult with the aircompanies these days, so I decided to get an electric upright for certain travels. With Wilson pickups mounted into the bridge it sounds for liveplaying very similar to my real bass. In the studio of cause the acoustic microphone makes the difference, but I am really happy with this new bass.
It is kind of funny that the loaders at airports make us pack the bass in huge flightcases the way they treat the baggage, and now they say they will not accept one piece heavier than 32 kg. Well a bass weights about 10-12 kg. the rest is secure packing due to them.................... !!!! And we have to pay the excess weight... strange.
I still try to bring the real bass to most concerts, but it’s good to have the possibility with the Silent Bass.
I also went on a very successful tour in England with Ketil Bjørnstad in March. On this tour I played with Andy Shepard for the first time. He is great and we plan to do some more together in the future. The trio with Ferenc Snetberger and Paolo Vinaccia did some very good concerts this spring. I really enjoy the sound of this trio.
A nice experience for me was also the concerts up north of Norway with Norwegian trumpeter Tore Johansen. Just before the summer Markus Stockhausen,Patrice Heral and I did two concerts with Bergischer Symphoniker in Remcheid and Solingen. The trio with Markus and Patrice just plays itself. It is just to listen and follow the stream ----- great.

This fall has been very interesting in the sense of doing so many different things.
I did a commission I called " Independency" for a duo with Scottish saxplayer Tommy Smith and myself. BBC recorded it.
We did two concerts with The Dahl/ Andersen/ Heral Trio. One in Rotterdam, Holland and one in Nevers, France. These concerts are always different and the interplay is really in focus.
The tour in England with “ Joyosa” was also very nice, but some of the venues were not really the best for this music, but my good friend and sound engineer David Solheim helped us out a lot.
Then we did some trio concerts with Ferenc Snetberger, Paolo Vinaccia and myself.
Our CD "Nomad " has been very well received and the trio in concerts has developed to a really great event.
The most fantastic venue this fall was The new Budapest Concert house.

This room can change the acoustics from a room with PA to a perfect room for a String Quartet. I came to think of what Mal Waldron once said, " You got to do the bad once to appreciate the good ones. "
The trio concert was sold out in Budapest.
I did one more concert with my Electra group in Dublin. For this concert we had only one drummer ,Paolo Vinaccia, and a Norwegian singer Berit Nordbakken Solset.
It worked so well so I decided to slim the band down to 5 pieces + David Solheim doing the sound.
Before Christmas I will be part of a Norwegian evening at The Barbican Center in London on December 8
Then its Christmas vacation
Merry Christmas and happy New Year.
News October 1st 2005 I want to congratulate Bojan Z for winning the European Jazzprize. He is a great pianoplayer.

European Jazzprize 2005 This summer I got the news that I am nominated for "European Jazzprize 2005" together with drummer Han Bennik and pianoplayer Bojan Z The result will be anounced September 20 and the prize will be given on Dec 9 in Wien with a concert on the 10 of December. The jury consist of radiopeople, journalists and festivalpromoters from 23 countries in Europe .
I had a very busy summer mostly due to my Artist In Recident at the Molde Jazzfestival. The concerts went very well with great reviews which was topped by several 6 stars reviews for my solo concert. I put down a lot of work for this concert and was very happy to get the response from the audience and the press. The whole week was like an ongoing concentration and fokusing. Trying to forget yesterday`s concert and just wake up and fokus on a new concert with new musicians and material. This was a new experience to me and very demanding. I am now writing a commission for a duo with Scottish saxplayer Tommy Smith and myself . This will be performed in Aberdeen Sept 15.
News June 7 - 2005
I will be " Artist in Resident " this year at the Molde Jazzfestival . I was very proud to be asked to do this . Earlier A.I.R has been Chick Corea ,Pat Metheney and Michael Brecker. It take most of my time now to prepare this event. On Monday July 18 I will perform ELECTRA with the band .This will be in the main concerthall of the festival. On July 19 I will do a solo concert at a smaller stage . Here I will use some live electronics as well. July 21 there will be a trio concert at a club-concert hall with Hungarian acoustic guitar player Ferenc Snetberger and Paolo Vinaccia percussion and drums. This trio has been working quite a bit recently and we have a new cd " NOMADS" comming out in September on ENJA records. On July 23 there will be a concert in the main hall again. This time with Nana Vasconcelos from Brazil ,percussion and Kudsi Erguner from Turkey ,Ney flutes. I worked a lot with Nana in the 90 -ties , but Kudsi I just played with a couple of times. I am planning some songs , but it will be very improvised where the sound of each player has a main role. I am really looking forward to this .We only have one day to rehearse , but Kudsi and Nana are two of the most soulfull people I have met so this will be a fantastic experience.
After I decided who I wanted to invite for this occation it struck me that there were Greek , French, Italian, Turkish, Brasilian, Hungarian and Norwegian musicians with me. With all respect for American jazz I liked this feeling.

I’m on my way home from London after two nights at Pizza Express with John Etherige on guitar and John Marshall on drums. Tomorrow I will play at Oslo jazz festival with the American guitarist now living in Scotland Preston Reed and on Friday I fly to Frankfurt for a concert on Saturday with Paolo Vinaccia on drums and Ference Snetberger on guitar.
Next week I will master my new CD “Electra “at Cutting Room in Stockholm. This is with Arve Henriksen trumpet Eivind Aarseth guitar, Paolo Vinaccia and Patrice Heral drums and percussion plus the Greek singer Savina Yannatou singing “Electra’s song” in ancient Greek. It was originally music I wrote for the theatre piece “Electra “by Sophocles that premiered in Athens 2002.
Although it is an old Greek drama, the director Yannis Margaritis wanted some very modern music. I have remixed the music for CD and added some drums and percussion including some electronic beats that Nils Petter Molvaer made for me on one of the songs.
The Cd will be out on ECM beginning of next year.

Arild Andersen: double-bass; 'Vassilis Tsabropoulos: piano; John Marshall: drums.
Arild Andersen's trio emphasises the writing and playing of Greek pianist Vassilis Tsabropoulos, whose melodic improvising and sense of form are influenced by his background as a classical musician. Tsabropoulos's tunes, and his arrangement of Ravel here, cast the jazz ‘piano trio’ genre in another light - as do his contributions to Andersen’s pieces and the collective improvisation “European Triangle". Arild Andersen's driving bass and John Marshall's inventive drums give the music its sense of propulsion. For further information click on the cover. Buy this CDNew CD

Arild Andersen’s compilation takes a zigzag path through his discography highlighting his own groups, his soloistic brilliance as a bassist and his perceptiveness in recognizing talent in bud. Quite a few musicians received early exposure through Andersen’s efforts. Amongst them: Bill Frisell, Nils Petter Molvær, Jon Balke, Bendik Hofseth, Bugge Wesseltoft and, more recently, Vassilis Tsabropoulos. Andersen’s :rarum also includes encounters with established masters Paul Motian, Kenny Wheeler, and Ralph Towner. “It’s been some fantastic years with ECM, and I feel I’ve just started.” Order this CD

Looking back at my recordings, it strikes me how many young talents came my way. They have a certain energy that I always enjoyed.
It started already in 1974, after working with Jan Garbarek ’68-’72 and then some time in New York with Sam Rivers among others. I was 29 and formed my own band with 18 years old Jon Balke (piano) and PÂl Thowsen (drums). This led to my first recording for ECM in my own name. The album title is "Clouds In My Head" and "305w 18 St." ( Sheila Jordan’s place , where I always stayed when I was in New York) is from this recording.
We made three records with my group 75-79 .The other track from this period is "Sole" from "Green Shading Into Blue" here also with a very young talented pianoplayer Lars Janson. I also used a Mini Moog and a Solina Stringensemble in addition to the acoustic quartet, something that jazz purists found strange at the time. I still enjoy the blending of electronic and acoustic music.
Then I made a couple of projects.
The first with Kenny Wheeler , Paul Motian and Steve Dobrogosz, a young American pianoplayer living in Stockholm.
"A song I used to play" is from the album "Lifelines"
My next project was a concert at the Molde International Jazzfestival in Norway. They asked me to put together a "Dreamband " for the festival and I asked Alphonse Mouzon whom I met in New York when he worked with Mc Coy Tyner early in the ‘70 after he had been with Weather Report.
John Taylor has always been one of my favorite musicians. I heard a few notes on an album of the then unknown guitarist Bill Frisell . I found him and asked him to come to Norway.
The concert, a two-track radio recording, was released and later reissued on CD with the whole concert. "The Sword Under His Wings" is from this concert.
Bill and I toured in Norway as a duo the following year and this led to the duo playing on his first album for ECM,"In Line". "Shorts" is from this album.
After these "project years" I started a quintet, which we later called
"Masqualero" after the Wayne Shorter tune. This time with the talents of then 22 year old trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer and saxophonist Tore Brunborg. Jon Balke was back again and Jon Christensen on drums who I had not worked with in a band together since late ’60 with Garbarek . We had however played a lot of gigs together over the years.
This band lasted for ten years, with a few changes. We toured USA Scandinavia and Europe and did three Cd’s for ECM .
"Vanilje","Printer" and " Gardsjenta"is from this period. On Vanilje I’m making a background for my bass solo on a fretless electric bass with a loop machine that Frisell turned me on to. One of my very few appearances on electric bass.
In the late ’80 I met Norwegian traditional folk singer Kirsten Braaten Berg. I started to learn more of Norwegian music and after a commission work for the "Vossajazz" festival in ‘90; I made the album "Sagn". Here with percussion player Nana Vasconcelos, a collaboration that lasted for 5 years. The title song "Sagn" is included here.
My next work with Nana was a trio recording with Ralph Towner from which there is two tracks " Svev" and maybe the only standard I’ve recorded "For all we know "
Hyperborean is a word from Greek mythology and means " The people north of the north wind" This is my first time with "Cikada Stringquartet" who has done several recordings for ECM later. The "Island" is from this recording and features the Norwegian saxplayer Bendik Hofseth who also spent some years with "Steps Ahead".
My recent work has been with the Greek pianoplayer Vassilis Tsabropoulos. He comes from a classical background. I met and played with him in Athens a few years ago and asked him to join me with English drummer John Marshall for a trio recording .It was called "Achirana" which is a Peru Indian name on a river, meaning " That which runs pure, toward that which is beautiful." This is also Vassilis first recording in jazz. "She’s Gone" is the track from this CD. This is and old Norwegian song that I arranged. It’s been some fantastic years with ECM, and I feel I just started.
