Dahl / Andersen / Heral

Carsten Dahl asked Arild Andersen to join a new trio. Arild suggested Patrice Heral.

They started out with a tour and recording in Denmark February 2002. The musical report was so great, that a permanent trio under the name of Dahl/Andersen /Heral was born.

The music is written by Carsten Dahl and
Arild Andersen or jointly by the trio - tunes that often have no fixed starting point.

The music develops organic, it is dedicated and spellbinding. Electronics are used, but nothing pre-recorded whatsoever. Bass, voice and percussion, sampled there and then, often constitute the rhythmic background for the solos.

Already long ago Carsten Dahl established himself as one of the most important pianists in Denmark, and his international reputation is growing fast. Critics all over the world, points out his beautiful touch and great rhythmic energy.

He has played and recorded with, Joe Lovano, Johnny Griffin, Ed Thigpen, Jerry Bergonzi, Benny Golson, James Moody, Andy Sheppard and Richard Boone - in addition to practically any Danish musician worth mentioning.

For more than 30 years
Arild Andersen has been among the elite of European bass players. He had his real break-through as a member of Jan Garbareks Quartet in 1967-73. In 1982 he founded the pioneering experimental band Masqualero, which attained international cult status during its 10-year existence and is now part of European jazz history. Arild Andersen has been an ECM artist for more than 30 years. He has played with such musicians as Stan Getz, Paul Bley, Chick Corea, Don Cherry, Bill Frisell, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Ralph Towner , Radka Toneff and Sonny Rollins.

Patrice Heral is an amazing drummer and multi-musician, who displays a huge musical talent. He is also a brilliant singer. On stage he uses live electronics, and his musical attitude is marked by his love of Indian and North African music. Patrice Heral is from Montpellier, France. He has played with a number of international groups like the Vienna Art Ensemble, the remarkable guitarplayer Nguen Lę , bassplayer Renault Garcia Fons , Joe Zawinul and the Tunisian, singer and oud player Dhafer Youssef.

Albumet The Sign ble gitt ut i 2002, til stor glede for det europeiske jazzpublikummet:

”Et fantastiskt album!”
Danske Jazz Special

”…the real success of the album lies in how they can make the most measured melodic phrases on pieces such as ‘The Sorrow of Mankind’ or the title track swell to become grand proclamations. That is profound playing.”
